| People are not born evil, its the experience and choices in life that makes us who we are... We are all presented with opportunities to do evil every day, the choice to do it or not, comes from what we have experience in life, what we ( in our heads) beleive life to be. |

Hello...not sure if this thread is still active but when I was doing some research for a film that Im directing I found it. Dr. Dacher Keltner out of UC Berkeley just wrote a book called "Born to Be Good" and will be featured in the documentary Im working on.

| The answer is yes.Some people are born evil.It is not something unusual.People are born violent,mad and lazy.The people who are born evil are very easy easy to recognize form the ones that are not.They are are usually shy in nature and just simply feel evil no matter the religion,social function or family.Usually it's the first born in a family.I'm also a first born.So yes some people are born evil just as some people are born good.I wish I was good though.Living with ths hell in my soul does as not help at all.And yes most of us are characterized as mad or in the worst case antisocial. |

| Yes people are born evil. When God first made Adam, Adam was not evil. However because of the sin committed in the garden of eden, this made Adam evil. Since we all came from Adam, that means we have Adams evil blood in us. So yes we're all born evil initially. For example: Think about two little toddlers you see playing. These two toddlers are being raised in a Godly home. They have never been exposed to the world or evil. Yet one child hits the other to take away a toy. How did this happen? They've never seen such acts, yet they know how to commit these acts. It's the sin in their blood. But the parents have the ability to correct those actions and raise that child up in a Godly environment. So as the parents see these types of behavior, they can teach them not to do it. However, once that child becomes a certain age, they have to chose Jesus for themselves. | People are born to fulifll their needs and not others.. But a bigger question should be is that are peoples need socially ethical? People who hunger will do cannibalism to keep themselves alive but, it is natural and it isnt a act of evil or good unless used for a source of punishment.. Humans may say they're a supreme good but the reason why people help other is to booste themselves in one way or another |

| Yes I believe so... It all comes down to breeding. If your fathers has a angry or violent temperment it is possible to be pasted down. Genes can determine these things. So someone can be born with a higher chance of being 'evil' than another. But someone being born of pure evil (whatever that is) is very unlikely. |

| Yes, but are you originally born evil/ selfish and then later through conscious experience do move away from the original? See the way that people are thinking is that people form their nature through experience but what about those without those experiences. The "wild" children are brought up without those kind of experiences and are generally selfish untill they are actually taken into the real world. Logic would dictate that yes people are naturally evil, but when put into social enviroments, they find that to be able to survive properly they must change. It only makes sense. |

I agree with you to an extent on the issue of choice, but I believe few people are able to make unbiased choices for example despite my lofty ideals and belief that violence rarely solves things I am someone with an overabundance of aggression now it may be my upbringing, but I suspect that it's more fundamental than that.
This doesn't mean that I have no choice, but it does mean that some choices are a lot harder to make than others for different people and they are more likely to fall one side of the fence than others.
For example, I don't believe I chose to be as aggressive as I am, but I can try and exercise control and choice over my tendancies and that is why at the moment I am nursing sore knuckles as I chose to be "good" and take it out on a wall rather than a person who may or may not have deserved it. |

First and foremost - what IS evil?
Usually, evil is associated as harmful act towards man, woman, mankind, or animal. For example, you steal money from your mum for new skirt, although you probably could work to buy it, but as it is, you chose easier path. Are you evil? Undoubtedly you're bad, because you had hurt your mum, even if it wasn't done in plain sight. But if your mum needs that money to pay rent for the flat, and you stole it just because you HAD to have that designer skirt, and you feel no remorse at the consequence of probably soon-to-be evicting from the flat ...heh, you can be described as self-centered, stuck-up egoistical prick/bitch, and some would say you're evil...
You drown a litter of kitties your cat just carried in.... are you evil? You can't afford food for them, because you're low-payed, barely surviving from one month to another. Are you evil because you secured your continued survival on the lives of feline fleabags? Of course, anima ... |

Good and evil are just words. And you judge other people's actions as either good or evil based on your values, most of them spoonfed to you since birth.
Why is it okay to go to war and kill someone because your government tells you to, when it is "evil" to kill someone for personal benefit? |

My respect for all your opinions but here's
another point of view - evil is a matter of perception.
Just like everything else in your life, it is invented by man for whatever reason. There is no evil in the universe, there's nothing evil in an asteroid smashing into a planet and distroying it, there's nothing evil in a lion killing a cheetah's offspring. It's the way things work - people have a concious and that's what makes you separate evil from good. That concious is formed with time and with experience. I think that people aren't born evil or good - we are born stupid. So what's wrong or right is decided for us, but not by us, from day 1. Weather your evil or not is decided for you by your surroundings, ergo - you're not born evil/good, you are made evil/good. That's why crazy people can't be evil - they just don't understand their surroundings. |

The problem concerning the evilness is the definition. Not the general one, but rather the regional different definitions. An example:
One hates jews, of course he is evil then. But he probably won't be as evil in some arabian country as in the western world, since the arabs don't like jews that much.
Another problem is that there are several other aspects that could be classified as evil too. Schadenfreude for example. When someone, who is hated by you, has misfortune, it makes you happy. Is that evil? Or is that human? Maybe you will again find some region, where this differs again. That's the main problem anyway, when you discuss about evilness.
But when you know that this differs, then you can ask yourself why. Well, there are different societies all over the world with different cultures, morales and ethics. And that is why the definitions of evilness are different everywhere. The smaller such a group is, the better the moral and ethics fits to most of the people i ... |

Evil.. evil is the reverse site of the coin.. for some plp maybe is the bad one, but for anothers? Who can tell what is right or wrong? Somethimes people are making something, supposed by them as "good" and too many times it is definatelly not good for someone other. So are they Bad?

Anybody is completly bad or good.
But the people can do mistakes. Mistakes can be viwed like an evil attitude, buts it´s only a mistake. The evil concept is formed in point of view.
In the nature of men thare´s not space for evil or good. The humankind create this concepts to try understand the world. |

ok in the first that's my article and i wrote it before but in my e-mail in the briefcase that to recheck on my article that no wronge in it and insure the article that's explain my all point so i didn't publish it in any site yet and i wrote that article to publish it at yahoo site to answer the quiz in yahoo answer http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060929141837AAYeiVJ&show=7 but i didn't send it because my e-mail was stolen after day from the time i wrote the article in briefcase and that's the second time my e-mail stolen and i get it back again and after that i forgot to publish it on the site and i remembered the article when i saw the quiz in the site so i published it .....i'm sorry that not my fault and my e-mail was stolen and i don't know that they published the article ......i don't know what i can do about that because my e-mail was stolen ...and i know that your decision will be fair...i hope that you understand my situation.......

| My sister and I are 3 yrs apart and were brought up exactally the same and yet we have been to family therapy and we almost had the social services round to take her away as my parents could not cope wih her continues bad behaviour! She ran away on 2 xmas eves and now has my dad suffering from Depression so I speak from personal experience when I say that Yes people are born evil and although I love my sister to pieces and she is getting better I still can't help but think this. |

| I have a baby daughter. From the moment she was born, she made me feel good. She has an aura of love around her. She is selfish as hell and angry when she does`nt get her way, but what it all boils down to is that she is good. She shows me love in so many ways, as she grows older. I believe that good makes good and evil makes evil. It`s a circle. |

Let us say that we are all born weak. We are born with the potential for greatness, yet we often give into our weakness and take the easy path, even if it is not the right one. It is up to each one of us to overcome our inherent weakness – our inclination to sin – our original sin. God allows us to be tested, and we can either rise to the challenge or fall prey to sin. And yes, some may succeed in resisting sin without the aid of God, but the vast majority of us need His guidance, aid and forgiveness.
And if a person is raised in an environment that constantly tells him that he is evil? The damage done could be monumental. Huge therapy bills at the least, destructive relationships, codependency, sociopathic tendencies… This is just a cautionary commentary. Maybe the moral of the story is simply to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, because sometimes mankind will disappoint us – and sometimes it won’t.

People are inherently born evil.Consider the fact that you have to be taught to be good,you are taught society's difference between right and wrong,you are taught good manners,you are taught politeness,these do not come naturally.If a child was reared in an enclosed environment,with no contact with the outside world,then released into the world when old enough,to survive,then it would revert to animalistic behaviour to survive.It would be a case of survival of the fittest,killing to eat ,stealing,raping when sexually aroused.

| Everyone does so called "evil acts", the philosophical definition for evil is, a selflish act that brings you pleasure. For example love. You love someone becuase it makes you feel good, it brings you pleasure to know that someone cares about you to so inturn that is considered a selfish act by both people in that loving state. | All I needed to read was man of faith, thats why this joker doesn't have any proof. That's in no way an attack at any religion. But the entire article sounded like opinion not fact. The youth's of suburban family are the worst example for their parents work extensive hours leaving there children to make friends with others their age who are in the same boat. And they raise themselves in most cases. And if you don't believe a bad childhood leads to a bad adult hood you're insane. Most ppl walking the streets have poor families and have been treated wrongful by even men/women who state their faith as you have. |

Respect to all other opinions on this post.
Almost no one else has mentioned this but I think people are born evil, as everything we do in life from birth to death is for our own personal benefit in come way which could be said to be selfish extending into being evil in some way or another. This goes along with saying that doing these deeds benifit other people as well in some cases but the idea remains that we all do things for ourselves at the base of everything. |
